Twitter Bans Satirical Website For â€œHatefulâ€ Trans Joke

The right-wing conservative satire site Babylon Bee was recently suspended on Twitter after posting a joke naming U. S. Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Rachel Levine, who is a trans woman, â€œMan of the Year. The joke may be hacky and degrading, and a clearly failed attempt at â€œsatire,â€ but that doesnâ€™t mean a giant tech behemoth like Twitter should have exclusive power to ban anyoneâ€™s speech based on whatever the companyâ€™s algorithm and executives decide qualifies as â€œhateful.â€

As Jimmy points out, this latest instance of censorship represents yet another step toward granting the tech industry a monopoly over deciding what speech is acceptable and allowed and what will be deemed unfit for public consumption. Is that what we want?
